Common questions about TextSafe
What is TextSafe?
TextSafe is a free, encrypted text storage service. You can save text, notes, passwords, or any content and access it from any device using a passcode. All content is encrypted in your browser before being stored, and automatically deleted after your chosen time period.
Do I need to create an account?
No. TextSafe requires no registration, email, or personal information. Your access is controlled entirely by your passcode and optional color code.
Is TextSafe free?
Yes, TextSafe is completely free to use. We accept optional Bitcoin donations to cover server costs, but the service remains free regardless.
Can you read my stored content?
No. Your content is encrypted in your browser using your passcode before it reaches our servers. We only ever see encrypted data that we cannot decrypt. This is called zero-knowledge encryption.
Can you recover my passcode if I forget it?
No. We never receive or store your passcode. It is used only in your browser to generate encryption keys. If you forget your passcode, your data cannot be recovered by anyone. This is by design.
What encryption does TextSafe use?
TextSafe uses AES-256-GCM encryption, the same standard used by governments and financial institutions. Keys are derived using Argon2id, a memory-hard algorithm that resists GPU-based brute-force attacks.
What is the color code for?
The optional color code adds an extra layer of security. It is combined with your passcode to generate the encryption key. Even if someone knows your passcode, they also need the correct color to access your data.
How long is my data stored?
You choose the retention period when saving: 2 days, 7 days, or 30 days. After this time, your encrypted data is automatically and permanently deleted.
Can I access my content from another device?
Yes. TextSafe works on any device with a modern web browser. Just visit the website, enter your passcode (and color if you used one), and retrieve your content.
Can I update my saved content?
Yes. After retrieving your content, any changes you make are automatically saved. The expiration timer continues from when you first saved.
Is there a Chrome extension?
Yes. The TextSafe Chrome extension provides the same functionality in a convenient popup. Content saved in the extension can be retrieved on the website and vice versa.
I am getting "Incorrect code" but I know it is right
Make sure you are entering the passcode exactly as shown, including capitalization. If you used a color code when saving, you must select the same color when retrieving. Also check that your data has not expired.
My content is not found
Your content may have expired and been automatically deleted. TextSafe does not retain data beyond the selected retention period. There is no way to recover expired content.
